Software house, freelancer or in-house team? Cost and risk comparison
Software house freelancer in-house
Three paths to software#
You have an app idea or a need to streamline your business. You can hire a freelancer, build an in-house team, or commission a software house. Each path has a different cost and risk profile — here's a practical comparison.
Comparison#
| Criterion | Freelancer | In-house team | Software house | |---|---|---|---| | Time to start | fast | slow (hiring) | fast | | Upfront cost | low | high (salaries, tools) | medium | | Range of skills | narrow | broad, but takes years | broad immediately | | Continuity risk | high (one person) | medium | low (a team) | | Scalability | limited | slow | flexible | | Best for | small, short tasks | long-term product, constant need | a project with a clear goal, MVP, integrations |
When a freelancer makes sense#
Small, well-defined tasks, short timelines, limited budget. The risk: dependency on one person — illness, lack of time or disappearance stops the project. No backup, and often no process, tests or documentation.
When an in-house team makes sense#
When software is the heart of your business and you need continuous development for years. It's the highest fixed cost (salaries, hiring, tools, management) and the slowest start — but full control. Good for mature products, not for a first MVP.
When a software house makes sense#
When you want to start a concrete project quickly (MVP, integration, internal system) and have a full set of skills right away — backend, frontend, DevOps, UX — without building a team. You pay for the result, continuity risk sits with the team, and after launch you can move to SLA support. A common model: a software house builds the MVP and first version, and later (optionally) you build a team around it.
A common hybrid#
Many companies combine approaches: a software house delivers the first version and technical foundation, then an in-house team takes over development — with code ownership and documentation. A sensible way to start fast without closing off your future.
